Our civilization is becoming extinct while continuing to push technological changes even further and, hence, aggravating air, soil and water pollution. Capitalist market economy adopted throughout most of the world exists in a greater ponzi scheme which is based on unlimited consumption, and, inevitably, increases waste generation. It turned into a global ecological catastrophe pushing the biosphere to the brink of extinction.
A whopping 97 percent of ecologists worldwide admit global warming and its man-made nature, because it’s proved by a simultaneous growth of temperature and CO2 level unquestionable correlation. Any other rival explanatory model can never justify current climate changes. For one, natural cycles take thousands of years, whereas present-day climate is changing at a breakneck speed. Some might say volcanoes are to blame for CO2 emissions, but those produce two orders of magnitude less gas than humankind, and on top of it, volcanic ash rather causes some reduction in global temperatures.
No politician across the globe, be it ruling or opposition parties, has seriously admitted the gravity of the situation, and even the Paris Agreement on Climate Change is merely another exercise in hand waving. Thereby western civil activists join the struggle for the real changes in climate policy. Regular Joes, youth, and even children urge governments to take real actions against destructive climate changes and for human salvation. The movement is called ‘Extinction Rebellions’.
Greta Thunberg, a Sweden girl, has become a rallying point for the movement for saving the climate. Over 160 countries have become a part of her ‘Friday for Future’ taking 4 million of students to the streets on September 20. Thunberg was named Swedish Woman of the Year, while in the UK she was honoured with the Ambassador of Conscience Award. Also, Time magazine named her one of 100 most influential people. It is worth noting that 57% of students in America consider environment as a top priority issue.
Global civil society has already formulated agenda for a new green globalism. Meanwhile, Russians keep a stony silence. Climate protests that took place from 20-27 September didn’t bother Russia much, aside from a diminutive group of about one hundred protesters in Sokolniki Park striking against new legislation on rubbish dumps.
Greens, who are virtually non-existent in Russia, are a bitter enemy of an oil mob feeding on natural resources of the country. The mob are puppet masters of Russian politics, which is one of the reasons Greta Thunberg being witch-hunted.
Russia-K, religious Spas TV channel, and state-owned television in general have been attacking Greta. The popular YouTube channel Den that is considered to be patriotic has been inviting biased scientists such as V. Polevanov and A. Gorodnitsky, Doctors of Geology and Mineralogy, along with S. Savelyev, PhD in Biology, merely to exculpate mankind from climate liabilities. Simply put, they have been trying to prove the unprovable. Also, Greta has been targeted by Kremlin-loyal political experts like N. Starikov and popular TV hosts V. Solovyov and A. Norkin. Those heavy weapons of official propaganda have been practicing sucker punch against the girl and her diagnosis. They keep repeating that she is a paid activist but hesitate to elaborate who exactly is benefiting from her. She is further blamed for hindering industrial development in Russia, but it’s not her fault that oil and natural gas drilling is the only country’s thriving industry.
Regrettably, brainwashing actually works. The crowd has got no clue about Greta, though some consider the activist either nuts or bribed.
After all, nobody cares what Greta actually said at UN, yet her message was loud and clear: even 50% emissions drop in 10 years will yield only 50% chance to keep temperature within 1.5 degrees above red line, and there is barely any hope for humanity to survive beyond those climate shifts. At the same time, Generation We has not accepted that 50% risk of living in the middle of a planet-size dump inherited from their ancestors with no reliable tech at hand for removing carbon pollution from the air. We should stay away from the critical limits of CO2 concentration, which is 420 parts per million, even though we have already surpassed the limit of 350 gigatons.
You can never hear that in Russian mainstream media. That would otherwise mean a global oil demand decline and, in turn, a certain death for the mob latching on natural resource bonanza. This all means Russia will have to cut down and even stop fossil fuel production, reduce the use of the Northern Sea Route and stop Arctic pollution as requested by the global community.
The problem is that there is nothing else left in the country’s economy but oil and natural gas, which is also the main revenue source for the budget, let alone all the billionaires and oligarchs.
Giving up on fossils will inevitably lead to a financial meltdown given a total absence of alternative routes for the economy, which indeed means authorities have to overhaul economy right away and begin reviving high-end tech and science. Unfortunately, reforms are beyond the capabilities of those in charge, so the latter will have to go — either voluntarily or by force. Altogether, Greta’s ultimatum means revolution for Russia and many others — pulling out of fossil dependence will lead to the newer world, totally opposite to existing grand schemes erected by oligarchs and oil companies.
Those behemoths are trying to extinguish the environmental movement by demonizing Thunberg, but it is surely pointless and is merely a waste of money that could have benefited the country in so many different ways. The agenda indicating total denial among the government poses a major threat to the national security and Russia’s disposition in geopolitical warfare.
Climate change is the main danger for Russia and the rest of the countries, and refusing to admit it will only drag us further away from the greener and cleaner world.
